if the marcady Emmrich Harding fic isn't going anywhere can you give a general idea of how it was gonna go I was really interested. Only if you want to of course, I was just interested in what the relationships looked like - well- pre relationships.

So it was called "tend the rose that blooms" and the general idea was playing with two themes, one of gardening/botany which is a shared area of interest of Harding and Emmrich's (though he's more theoretical and she's more practical, another strand that I was gonna pull at) and one of dreaming.

The little conceit I wanted to play with was my decision that Marcady is named after an Orlesian name for the kind of spirit touched flower that Leliana and Alistair discover in Origins outside of Lothering. I had a little bit written:

“A Marcadisian Rose. Named for the Comte de Marcadis, it is said that they are flowers touched by the divine to blossom under any condition.” “I hear that,” she tells him. “Seems a little… fragrant.” “You are intolerable sometimes, you know.” “I know.” She smiles at him, and he doesn’t recall the last time he felt so light.

Pre-committing to the Romance, Harding is struggling with her feeling of responsibility towards Marcady, who is Varric's niece. She was adopted in Tevinter when her mother left Bartrand to return to the Ambassadoria, and Varric sought her out via Mae when he started to get a bit more... reflective on his life. With everything that happens, Harding feels she needs to look after her, but doesn't know how, especially when she suddenly gets her powers and Marcady seems to be unable to open up about her feelings. Meanwhile when Emmrich joins the party, he's immediately taken by Marcady's curiosity about magic and the fade; as a soporati she has lived outside of magic for years, and relishes the opportunity to learn more, which endears her to him. He gives her time and space to learn, and she is equally enamoured by the idea of life beyond death.

Then when things get more real with the titans, Harding leans more on Emmrich for understanding, Marcady gets more frustrated and angry, and Emmrich starts to wonder if he can truly, responsibly, court this very young girl. She starts to become more reliant on him to understand what it really means to dream, as does Harding, and he starts to see that what they really need is to find the tangible things, and stop reaching for dreams that they have been severed from. They need to tend the rose that blooms now, and that rose is their love for each other, based on friendship with strong, familial roots.

Okok so. All these characters are from the same story/world. And I just DSKAL;FJDIKAS;RFJHIDSA;JNHFKDLSA;JFKD I love them with all of my heart. They are my children. 

I waaaas gonna info dump about every individual character, but they all have ref sheets… so I’ll post those and info dump about that there.

BUT OH THE LORE. 

The main premise of the story is learning to accept our mental issues and moving towards healing. A lot of the concepts are pulled from IFS therapy, which has been my saving grace when dealing with my own mental health struggles.

Neo Pérez (bottom left), our main character, struggles with chronic depression and is not in a good place mentally. He hates wasting time and wants to find a “quick fix” for himself. After several failed attempts, he ends up at a weird Voodoo-magic shop. The lady insides gives him a drink in a bottle (which Neo later realizes is an opened Gatoraid bottle with the labeling ripped off (magic ‘aint cheap, ok)) and tells him to take small sips and wait for the magic.

Later, after the Gatoraid discovery, Neo angrily downs the entire bottle. The potion was intended to allow him to face bits of himself one or two at a time and work through his problems at an… accelerated pace. But by downing the whole thing, he creates chaos and the bits of his soul scatter. Neo now has to go and collect the pieces of himself and get them to (willingly) come back. And if he doesn’t, he will lose his memories, personality, etc :D 

His roommate Kip (top left)–who totally isnt in love with him, wdym–jumps up to help and recruits Astra (bottom right) and Olive (top right). Astra and Olive are dating and I love them.

ANYWAYS its still very much a wip. But I love them with all of my heart. They actually started out as a cute lil college romcom and….. Uh it spiraled lmao.

I was rambling on the issue of museums and human remains and how certain populations are more likely to have their bodies put on display to be gawked at and then went "well I guess the Pompeii casts were of Europeans. there are bones in there right?" and Googled it to make sure, at which point I confirmed that yes there are bones in there, but more interestingly DNA testing revealed that a cast of an adult holding a child everyone assumed was a mother and child were, in fact, a man and a kid entirely unrelated to him. Honestly that's more moving to me. Maybe they were connected in a way other than blood, but maybe a stranger saw a child when the world was ending and thought the one thing he could do was hold them.
